GUIDANCE

I turned down Columbia, Syracuse, and NYU to attend UPenn (a two-year government administration masters program at the Fels Institute at the University of Pennsylvania).  They sold me on the things I loved at Long Trail·close relationships with faculty, excellent advisors, great students, and lots of personal attention.  It just felt right to me."   Lynn Salkin '96, Winhall

COLLEGE GUIDANCE

"I do LOVE applications from Long Trail School. They are easy to read and extremely informative. When I accept your students I never worry if they will succeed, because I know they have already developed a solid educational foundation."  Victor Hugo Echandy, Admissions Counselor, Saint Michael's College

When the time comes to think about college, student receive plenty of help with choosing schools and getting through the application process.  The college coordinator works closely with students and parents, providing guidance in everything from selection to financial aid.  Our goal is to match students with the college that is right for their interests and goals.  The individual counseling students receive— and the academic preparation—make all the difference.

Long Trail begins giving students college guidance in the eighth grade when high school schedules are planned.  In the sophomore year, students visit nearby colleges and attend college fairs.  During the junior year, we guide and support students in identifying colleges of interest, preparing for the necessary tests and scheduling visits.  Throughout the senior year, the college coordinator meets regularly with students to assist with applications and make final decisions.

Long Trail's college preparation includes:
  • College Night information sessions held each fall for students and their families.
  • Students in 8-10th grade attend introductory informational sessions on the college selection/application process in conjunction with high school course selections.
  • Sophomores tour nearby colleges in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont.
  • Juniors attend sessions on the college search and application process, meet with consultants to develop an initial college list, investigate colleges through the Internet and catalogs, visit selected colleges in the spring and summer, and register and prepare for appropriate SAT, ACT, and AP testing.
  • Seniors meet with consultants to finalize their college lists, register and prepare for further SAT, ACT and AP testing, arrange final visits and interviews, submit applications, investigate and apply for scholarships, attend sessions on what to expect and how to manage the new experiences of college life, and make final decisions.
  • The College Coordinator oversees this process, provides families with the LTS College Planning Handbook, and meets regularly with juniors and seniors and their parents to ensure that they are well informed and on schedule.

Students leave Long Trail School well equipped for pursuing their ambitions.  Our alumni are teachers, artists, entrepreneurs, investment advisors, play directors, firefighters, real estate agents, blacksmiths, architects, and engineers.  They include the founder of an organization that helps land-mine victims in Vietnam, a dairy farmer, a young woman who runs projects for Microsoft in Vienna, a Columbia law student, and a computer programmer in London.  Our Alumni are diverse, but they have one thing in common—they acquired the tools they needed to succeed in a life of their own design.  They can do anything!
