CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

Long Trail sponsors a branch of the National Honor Society.  To be considered, a student in grades 10-12 must have a B or better in all classes and have been at LTS for at least one full year. A faculty committee chooses members who exhibit scholarship, leadership, service, character, positive attitude, responsibility, and respect for others.

Seventeen NHS members in 2005-06 are school leaders. Their activities include raking lawns for community members, keeping Dorset West Road clean, running LTS Pride Week and Secret Santa, and awarding gold stars for commendable efforts within the community. Each spring NHS members cook up a ziti dinner that is open to the public. With fundraising proceeds, the LTS NHS helps support local community service projects; last year they voted funds to the Heifer International Project.

STUDENT COUNCIL
Middle School and Upper School Student Council members take an active role in helping shape policy at Long Trail, as well as sponsoring social and fundraising events.

STUDENT AMBASSADORS
The Students Ambassadors Club is a group of Long Trail students whose goal is to help with the Admissions process. To promote the school to prospective students, they coordinate socials and other events throughout the year. They also organize applicant visits and LTS hosts and facilitate the orientation of new students into the school community.

TRAIL MIX
The school's newspaper, edited and printed by upper schoolers under the supervision of their faculty advisor, is a compilation of submissions from all members of the school's community.

YEARBOOK
The Trail is Long Trail's yearbook, written, edited, funded, and designed by upper school students with their faculty advisors.

MODEL UN
Long Trail's Model UN has traveled to Montreal and Ithaca, NY to participate in conferences drawing up to 1,000 high schools. At the Cornell Model U.N. Conference, Long Trail received the Secretary General's Award in recognition of the Best Small School Delegation.

DRAMA
"Drama is open to all interested students and is intended to foster creative growth and technical know how in a fun, supportive environment," LTS Drama Director Tracey Wesley explained of the Long Trail philosophy.  "Students are encouraged to participate in all areas of the theatre while building self confidence and developing camaraderie with their fellow thespians.  We are blessed by the generosity and talent of many community organizations and individuals."

Everyone at Long Trail takes pride in the outstanding quality of the drama production, put on by student actors and supported by student technicians.  Long Trail is widely recognized for its dramatic excellence.  It has participated in the Vermont Drama Council Regional One-Act Festival since 1990 and has qualified for the State Festival five times.  Long Trail is also one of 50 American high schools selected to participate in the Summer 2005 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, the largest performing arts festival in the world.

In the last weeks before opening night, as an actor, technician or stagehand, students are busy until late afternoon putting the finishing touches on their performances.
