LTS WILL BE “STEAM”ED UP on March 10

On March 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, families and community members are invited to check out Long Trail School’s STEAM! STEAM is an educational concept which incorporates the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/humanities and Mathematics. STEAM projects allow students to explore the interconnectedness of ideas in the world around them. This evening’s events will be a celebration and showcase of what the students have learned and achieved. There will be things to see and do throughout the entire building.

The Whalen Common Room will be filled with science and math groups. There will be opportunities to try your hand at a MathCounts lightning round as well as to hear about the H&R Block Budget Challenge, a chance for students to learn about personal finance in a competition for $3 million in grants and scholarships. Hands-on science experiments and presentations will be found here too.

In the Kouwenhoven Library, the 6th and 7th grade Humanities class will be presenting an EuroFair from 6-7  pm. These students have explored many aspects of the countries of Europe: they will represent their countries with displays and representative food samples.

In the Runnette Physical Activity Center, there will be displays by the LTS Engineering Club and the Robotics enrichment class. In addition to the demonstrations of robotics, attendees will be able to fly a drone. Want one of your own? There will be a raffle for a remote control drone with built-in HD camera that night, so plan to buy a ticket or two!

In the art rooms, classroom projects will be on exhibit. If you want to get your hands dirty, LTS students will supervise and assist the making of clay bowls for Empty Bowls 2017, Long Trail’s commitment to local food needs and hunger-related charities. Additionally, there will be pottery wheel demonstrations and some hands-on art projects to complete.

An International Baccalaureate (IB) Drama skit and the winning Airband performance will take place in the LTS Theater. Airband is Long Trail’s wildly popular lip sync competition done for the last 10 years in the winter.

The Kiva will be the site of performances by the IB Band class. Stop by this venue for great tunes and amazing student talent!

In case all of this STEAM has made you hungry, Long Trail’s 8th grade will offer a dinner as a means of fundraising for their spring trip to Montreal. Food representing the cultures of the languages taught at LTS–tacos, quiches, salads and apple strudel– will be available. With pricing for kids/students ($5) and adults ($8), dinner will be served in 30 minute intervals in reserved blocks: 5-5:30; 6-6:30; 6:30-7; 7-7:30 and 7:30-8. Reservations can be made with Chelley Tifft at ctifft@longtrailschool.org or 802-867-5717 x190.
