The donor-advised fund (DAF) is an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift. DAFs provide immediate tax benefits while making your philanthropic giving easier. Here are two simple ways you can support Long Trail School through your DAF:

  1. Make an outright gift today by recommending a grant to LTS;
  2. Designate Long Trail School to receive all or a portion of the fund value upon the termination of the fund.

You can select the option that best suits your philanthropic and financial goals. Contact your DAF administrator to request a distribution or beneficiary form, or download the appropriate form(s) from your administrator’s website.

If you include Long Trail in your DAF distributions, please let us know and use our legal name and federal tax ID.

Many companies sponsor matching gift programs that match a charitable contribution made by an employee. Not only does LTS benefit from the increased gift, but a donor may qualify for a higher category of recognition when the gift is matched.

Ask your human resource department for a matching gift form and send it with your contribution.

If you would like to make a multi-year pledge to the Annual Fund, please contact the Development Office. Thank you so much for considering a multi-year pledge and investment in Long Trail School.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD’s) provides the opportunity for individuals age 70½ and older to make direct transfers totaling up to $100,000 per year to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations from their IRA’s, without having to count the transfers as income for federal income tax purposes.

Benefits to the Donor:

  • You can transfer IRA assets directly to Long Trail School without paying income tax on the withdrawal.
  • The amount of the charitable transfer will count toward your annual minimum required distribution.
  • You may contribute up to $100,000.

The funds must be transferred from a traditional IRA or a rollover IRA (or inactive SEP or SIMPLE accounts) directly to Long Trail School.

By making a planned gift, you can strengthen Long Trail School and gain financial and tax benefits for you and your family.

There are many ways to support Long Trail’s future that do not affect you and your family during your lifetime. Although including a bequest in your estate plan is one way to leave a legacy, there are other arrangements, similar to bequests, which are simple and straightforward, and accomplish the same goal.

  • Bequests (gifts by will or living trust)
  • Gifts of retirement plans
  • Gifts of life insurance

We can help you or your representatives plan a gift that will best serve your financial future and benefit Long Trail School. We can provide sample language, tax calculations, and informational literature, and are happy to meet with you by phone or in person. To learn more about Long Trail’s planned giving opportunities, please contact the Development Office.

You can make a gift of marketable residential or commercial real estate to Long Trail School and receive substantial financial benefits. Such gifts are subject to the school’s approval. If Long Trail School is unable to use donated property, it will be sold and the proceeds used as needed or as you specify.

If you make a gift of real property to the school, you will be credited with a contribution valued at the fair market value of the real estate, as determined by an independent, qualified appraiser. You pay no capital gains tax on the appreciation portion if the property has been held for more than one year.

If you do not wish to give an entire building or parcel of land, you may donate an undivided interest in the property.

If you are considering leaving your home to the school through your will, you may want to give it now but retain the right to live in it for your lifetime. While you will continue to pay taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs, you can receive a substantial charitable income tax deduction in the year you make the gift.
